Fitness is
Fun, 8-week sessions for youth ages 11 – 16
from families living in Columbus 43201 neighborhoods,
will begin in July at Directions for Youth & Families'
central office, 1515 Indianola Avenue. The program will
encourage youth to engage in more physical activities
and to eat more nutritious foods through its two
components, physical activities and nutrition. Physical
fitness sessions will teach youth about basic fitness
techniques while discussing the benefits of increased
physical activity. Youth will participate in activities
such as stretching, aerobic conditioning, core strength
training, and sports-specific training. Nutrition
sessions will discuss benefits of consuming healthy
foods and the disadvantages of excess saturated fats,
sugar, and salt. Youth will then make and enjoy healthy
snacks from ingredients they can find in their
neighborhood.
Directions for Youth & Families is grateful to
The JPMorgan Chase Foundation for
support of Fitness is Fun.
Artie Isaac, a long-time
friend of Directions for Youth & Families, is presenting
(and acting in) a live, independent,
community production of "Our Town" at Cassingham
Elementary School in Bexley, June 26-29. A share
of the show's net proceeds will be donated to Directions
For Youth & Families.
In 1938, Thornton Wilder's "Our Town" opened on
Broadway. During the 70 years since, "Our Town"
has provided enormous direction about living life
thoughtfully. The messages of "Our Town" — live
mindfully, appreciate relationships, life can be
meaningful and all too short — are the messages that our
counselors and teachers take into the lives of kids
and families every day.
