Friend Helping Families

We invite you to be part of our Friends Helping Families!

Directions for Youth & Families provides mental and behavioral health services that emphasize commitment to family, school, and work. We serve over 7,880 youth and families in central Ohio annually. Our programs include counseling and clinical services, parenting and kindergarten readiness programs, as well as after-school and summer programs at our two youth centers.

Many of our families are economically challenged and many are facing difficult situations. We know that a little help at holiday time is a true gift to our client families. Please join us in helping some of our youth and their families have a wonderful, wish-filled holiday.

There are numerous ways to help.

  • You can send a donation and DFYF volunteers will do the shopping
  • DFYF can provide a "wish list" from one of our families, you do the shopping and DFYF volunteers will do the wrapping
  • You do the shopping and wrapping!

We encourage you to be one of our Friends Helping Families! Join us in bringing smilies and joy to youth and their families during the December 2016 holiday season.

or send your request to Stephanie at or 614-294-2661 to adopt a family (or two!) for the holidays

Donations can be mailed to DFYF Friends Helping Families, 1515 Indianola Avenue, Columbus, OH 43201.

Excerpts from July 3, 2016 The Columbus Dispatch article

The happiest occasions of the year at Directions for Youth & Families are the Christmas gift giveway and the backpack-arrival day.

Directions for Youth & Families, a social-service agency, provides counseling, education, after-school programs and other services to children for whom a carefree childhood isn't always in the cards.

Many are challenged by poverty. Some are forced into caretaker roles at tender ages for younger siblings.

The agency has a support group for those who have lost relatives to homicide and another for who have become victims of sexual abuse.
Although many of its clients come from tough circumstances, Directions offers a bright, clean, safe place for children. It has rooms full of musical instruments, fitness equipment and artwork.

It was lively with youngsters enrolled in the summer program on the afternoon I was there.
