The Short Stop Youth Center is
a community-based prevention program that creates
opportunity for young people ages 7-19 to enhance their
personal growth and development. Youths learn the
importance of abstinence from drugs and tobacco,
violence, and delinquent behavior.
Short Stop prevention and education group discussion
programs focus on leadership development, anger
management, conflict resolution, decision-making,
problem-solving skills, personal goal setting, and
consequences of self-destructive behaviors.
Youth
activities include:
African Dance and Drum –
instruction in traditional African dances and African
drums
Film Club – classes in video and still
photography
Hip-hop dance class – instruction in the latest
elements
Homework help – in language arts and math, access
to computers for research and writing papers, and
assistance with school assignments
Production Team – Students create artwork,
including t-shirts, greeting cards, ceramic tiles,
decorative soul bowls, and original paintings, all of
which are available for purchase by the public. Students
must maintain good academic grades. Students receive a
stipend for their work.
SEEDS – (Self Esteem through Effective
Decision-making Skills) - program that focuses
on prevention, education, and skills enhancement for
youth ages 7-10
Theatre and Stage Program – instruction in
acting, lighting, and sound control, skills needed for
successful productions, which are open to the public
Visual Arts – opportunity for youths to express
themselves in a wide range of art media, from drawing
and painting to print making
Vocal Program – instruction and coaching for the
vocal ensemble which performs throughout the year with
the theatre program and also presents performances open
to the public
